The Truth About Using Natural Skincare to Treat Acne
The science of skincare has come a long way in the past few decades, and yet, even with all of the advancements, some of the best skincare still comes directly from nature. Really, it’s a no brainer. Pretty much everything we need to be healthy inside and out can be found in nature, the trick is just to narrow down the most effective ingredients and take advantage of their healing benefits!
We have taken the best natural acne fighting ingredients we could find and put them into one sweet skincare line!
What causes acne?
First, let’s take a look at the root of the problem. Acne prone skin is an issue that plagues almost all of us at one time or another, and here’s the main reasons why that might be:
Hormonal changes, due to puberty, pregnancy, PCOS or (let’s be honest here) pretty much anything else because our hormones tend to be temperamental!
Clogged pores. Oil, dirt, bacteria, and dead skin cells are the usual culprits here, but don’t write oil off completely because of that! We will explain more below.
Bacteria. We mentioned that above, but it is one of the main contributing factors that combine with your skin’s seemingly normal production of oil and dead skin cells and transforms it into angry red villains that we would rather live without.
Stress, both internal and external. What’s the difference? Internal stress is anything going on in your life that contributes to poor sleep, and in turn, poor sleep can exacerbate acne. External stress on the other hand is all of the environmental factors that our skin has to try to combat on a daily basis: smoke, smog, free radicals, medications that you are on, etc. They are all things that our body wouldn’t have to protect against in ideal conditions.
So how do I treat it, if I can’t avoid all of these things?
Your main goal when dealing with unwanted acne is to love your skin.
That might sound kind of 'woo woo', but let us explain. All of the stressors mentioned above throw your skin out of balance, and we want to bring it back into balance, as gently as possible.
Many of the products that are on the market and promise to treat acne use abrasive ingredients to try and muscle their way in and fight the acne with all they’ve got. Too strong of acids (which also aren’t all bad, more on that later), abrasive man-made chemical compounds, low quality ingredients and harsh scrubs all promise to blast your acne away, but really they could just be contributing to the problem.
Instead, let’s turn the focus to bringing your skin back to the balance it craves.
Believe it or not, in ideal conditions, your skin is pretty good at what it does!
Properly balanced skin will produce the right amount of oil needed for hydration and will develop an effective natural lipid barrier that actually protects it from external stressors, while maintaining the perfect hydration levels. The products we use, in addition to healthy general habits, allow our skin to function at its optimal level and work the way it is supposed to!
Bonus: when your skin is properly balanced, acne isn’t the only issue that will be resolved. The elasticity of your skin will also be strengthened, as well as the tone, texture, and vibrance!
So, let’s focus on keeping bacteria at bay, cleansing without stripping natural oil levels, and hydrating our skin with organic ingredients that it will love!
Which natural ingredients are best for treating acne?
Natural oils can be highly effective in combating breakouts, largely because many of them have antibacterial properties. Low quality skincare brands will use oils that are not skin friendly though, and this will contribute to clogged pores, so watch out for those.
A few from that list include Linseed, Peanut and Soybean oil.
Also, the artificial preservatives that are often used in them can damage your skin’s natural lipid barrier.
The list of beneficial oils is long and beautiful!
We have so many options when it comes to nourishing our skin with natural ingredients. The oils that we use at The Sweet Skin Co. to work their magic on your acne prone skin are: Sunflower seed oil, Olive oil, Orange peel oil, Grapefruit peel oil, and Peppermint oil.

One of the great things about natural ingredients is that nature really knows what it’s doing and there are some pretty potent and effective elements out there.
On the other hand, that potency can work against certain skin types in the form of sensitivities or even allergies.
We only use ingredients that are the least likely to cause irritation of any type. However, allergies are a very personal issue, and if you are prone to them, it’s always best to check the ingredients and run it by your GP.
